Fillings

Sometimes teeth develop tooth decay, which compromises the tooth’s structure. If left untreated, the decay can spread and large holes develop in the tooth – and this can become painful. The decay needs to be removed, and fillings are used to fill the hole created by the tooth decay.

There are several materials that can be used for fillings, and the skilful dentists at Portside Dental will select the best one based on the size and location of the decay and your individual needs. Composite resin is the most common choice for small to medium-sized fillings as it is durable, long-lasting, and matches the natural colour of the teeth for a seamless blend.

However, for larger cavities or when the tooth is significantly weakened, a more substantial restoration may be needed. This could be an inlay, onlay, or crown, depending on the extent of the damage. These restorations are typically made of stronger materials, such as porcelain or gold, and are custom-made to fit the shape of the tooth.

Understanding Composite Fillings

Getting a tooth-coloured filling is simple and straightforward and we can typically complete the procedure during one visit to our Newport dental clinic.

Our dentists begin by numbing the area to be treated. Then they clean the decay and bacteria from the impacted area of the tooth, leaving a hole that they will fill with composite resin material.

Composite resin is durable and bonds directly to the tooth after our dentists apply an etching material to help it adhere. They can also customise the composite resin to flawlessly match your tooth so your filling is not noticeable. The filling is cured with a special light that securely bonds the material to your tooth.

Don't Delay Addressing Tooth Decay

It’s important to address tooth decay early and get any necessary fillings or restorations as soon as possible to prevent further damage and discomfort. Regular dental check-ups and x rays can help catch decay in its early stages, allowing for less invasive and costly treatments.

You can minimise your risk of tooth decay by eating a healthy, balanced diet and avoiding sugary and acidic foods and beverages.

By taking care of your dental health, you can enjoy healthy teeth and gums for a lifetime. Don’t wait until you experience pain or discomfort to visit Portside Dental. Schedule a check-up today by calling our friendly reception team to stay on top of your oral health and prevent any potential problems from becoming serious issues.

The Benefits of Tooth-Coloured Fillings

Composite resin fillings offer several benefits our patients appreciate.
Excellent Durability
Because composite resin is bonded directly to your tooth, it provides excellent stability and durability over metal fillings that expand and contract with temperature changes in the mouth.
Appealing Aesthetics
Composite resin material can be customised to match your tooth and blend seamlessly into your smile. We can also use it fix minor cosmetic concerns like chipped teeth or tooth stains.
Tooth Structure
Composite fillings preserve more natural tooth structure since they bond directly to the tooth. Metal fillings require removing more healthy tooth structure for proper placement.
Mercury-Free
Composite resin is composed of microglass and resin particles. The composite resin material contains no metal or mercury components.
